Now Hiring! Cooperative Preschool TeacherMetzger Community Preschool is seeking an experienced, passionate and creative teacher to lead our cooperative preschool curriculum and nurture our students’ growth through a high-quality, play-based education.
Our school is one of the oldest operating cooperative preschools in the Portland metropolitan area. We attribute our longevity and reputation for excellence to the commitment of our community, families and fantastic teachers over the years. To learn more of our history, click here. Our cooperative preschool is organized and administered by the parent membership and operated under the direction of a qualified teacher. Parents hold offices, work on committees and assist the teacher in the classroom on a daily, rotating basis. The teacher, who is hired by the Board of Directors representing the parent membership, determines the curriculum and maintains standard procedures for the school program. Our school philosophy emphasizes the developmental approach to learning. We believe that young children learn best through play in an environment where they move freely and learn by doing. Learning centers give children the opportunity to observe, make choices, share materials with others, use language, and experience their world through play. Our goals of emotional, social and cognitive development, as well as the enhancement of large and small motor skills, are achieved through a well-planned physical setting and attentive adults. A low child/adult ratio allows for individual attention as needed, and the curriculum materials are planned to meet the needs of each child as well as the group. The school term follows the Tigard-Tualatin School District Calendar. For the 2021-2022 school year we plan to have a single teacher for both our Stars and Rockets classes. Our Stars class is for children who will be 2.5-years-old by September 1st of the enrollment year and, under normal circumstances, meets from 9:00am-11:30am, Tuesday and Thursday. Our Rockets class is for children who will be 3.5-years-old by September 1st of the enrollment year and typically meets from 9:00am-1:00pm; Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Two parent assistant teachers help with each class session. Parent assistant teachers arrive about twenty minutes prior to class on the days they participate. It is the responsibility of the teacher to see that materials are set up for use before the children and parents arrive, and to close at the end of the school day. Schedules and class structures are subject to change for special circumstances such as a need for ongoing COVID-19 precautions. The responsibility of the total educational program of the school is the continuous cooperative effort of the teachers and the parent membership. The teachers hold a fall orientation for parents, and are responsible for assisting in continuing parent education. Teachers act as advisors on matters of equipment, supplies, books, and so forth. Teachers are available for parent conferences. Teachers are required to attend board meetings, PCPO teacher meetings, and are required to obtain 15 hours a year in continuing education credits through local workshops, conferences, college classes, etc. A probationary term of three months shall be in effect. At the end of this term, the contract will be offered for continuance through the remainder of the school year if performance has been satisfactory as determined by the Board of Directors. Thereafter, the contract will be negotiated on a yearly basis, with a letter of intent given to the teacher in February. A Teacher is required to furnish current proof of CPR training, and basic first aid training. We are affiliated with the Parent Child Preschools Organization, PCPO. At Metzger Community Preschool, we don’t just accept difference — we celebrate it for the benefit of our students, families and our community. We are an equal opportunity workplace and employer. |
